Philosophy

Dr. Marzano follows a constructivist philosophy of education. He has also adapted Bloom's Taxonomy to create a New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives to incorporate the views he holds. The following link provides a video that highlights this philosophy.

McREL - Classroom Instruction That Works (2nd Ed.) Series

Dr. Marzano, along with Debra Pickering, and Jane Pollock collaborated on the first edition of Classroom Instruction that Works in 2001. In 2012, the second edition of this book was published (with new authors) and updated information and research. Dr. Marzano works in conjunction with McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning), who has created a series of videos available about each specific strategy.

I am providing the link to the various YouTube videos available through McREL (I have added them to a playlist, so there are multiple videos under this one link).

Classroom Application of Teaching Strategies

By following this link, you will find a chart that displays the nine strategies, as well as some classroom activity ideas and methods on what these look like when played out in a classroom.

It is important to remember that not all of these strategies can be nor should be used within one lesson. It is the teacher's job to decide which strategies best fit the objectives of the lesson. Also, consideration needs to be taken into account of the student's current needs; whichever strategies can be used to meet those needs should be implemented.
Dr. Marzano explains this himself in the video below:

Nine Essential Instructional Strategies

In the book, Classroom Instruction that Works (2001), Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock identify nine instructional strategies that help increase student achievement. These are often referred to as "high-probability" or "high-yield" strategies.

These Nine Strategies include:
  1. Identifying Similarities and Differences
  2. Summarizing and Note Taking
  3. Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition
  4. Homework and Practice
  5. Nonlinguistic Representation
  6. Cooperative Learning
  7. Setting Objectives and Feedback
  8. Generating and Testing Hypothesis
  9. Questioning, Cues, and Advanced Organizers

Below is a YouTube video that I put together to summarize the nine strategies.
